Dashain Nepalese People Main Festival: 2024 Dashian Wishes Quote

Discover 2024 Dashian Wishes Quote and Learn about our cultural significance of the Dashain Festival in Nepal 2024. Dashain is one of Nepal's biggest and most common celebrations. It lasts fifteen days and often occurs between late September and October, depending on the lunar calendar.

Introduction

Dashain is significant in both history and religion because it commemorates the triumph of good over evil, as represented by Durga over Mahishasura. The celebration is commemorated throughout Nepal, with a series of rites, family gatherings, and community events. Houses are scrubbed and garnished in preparation for the goddess's arrival, and animal sacrifices, such as goats, ducks, and chickens, are taken to offer to Durga.

The first of the nine days of Dashain is known as Ghatasthapana, during which people spread barley seeds in order to bring wealth into their homes. On the tenth day, known as Vijaya Dashami, elders apply 'tika' (a mixture of rice, yoghurt, and vermillion colour) and 'jamara' (sprouted barley grass) to the younger ones' foreheads. During the celebration, families gather, exchange gifts, and treat themselves to delectable delicacies. Both children and adults enjoy kite flying, playing on traditional swings (Ping), and playing card games, among other activities.

Dashain combines all the Nepalese people regardless of their regions and communities for celebration which make it a time of reformation and togetherness. The celebration has also a social economic importance as it encourages consumption with markets being filled with people buying new clothes, gifts and foods in preparations of the celebration.

Dashain festival in Nepal 2024

The Dashain Festival is started between the 17th and 26th day of Ashwin 2081 BS, according to the Nepali Calendar 2081. In our nation, It is recognised as the largest and most important event. It happens in either September or October (Ashwin or Kartik in the Bikram Sambat calendar). It starts with Ashwin's dazzling lunar fortnight and ends on Purnima, the full moon day. In 2024, the Dashain festival will include key religious and cultural occasions.

This is celebrated for nine days, with the eighth day, known as Maha Aastami, dedicated to the Goddess 'Kali', Durga's destructive side. It is regarded as one of the most important days, with people offering a variety of animals to the goddess in temples and at home in exchange for protection from evil.
The following day is also known as Maha Nawami, which is the ninth day of Dashain. On this day, prayers are made to Durga Mata for safety and blessings, while equipment and vehicles are prayed to be safe and provide luck for the coming year. Vijaya Dashami, the most important Dashain celebration, will be held on October 12th, 2024. It signifies the victory of the virtuous over the evildoers, as well as the goddess Durga's conquest over Mahishasur. This is the day when elderly members of any family draw tika and jamara on the young people's foreheads to represent prosperity and good health. Tika continues the next day, with the 18th and 19th of October designated as Dashain Tika days, when family members visit each other's homes to receive tika, blessings, and tokens.

The 15 Days we celebrate in Dashain

  • Day 1 - Ghatasthapana: The celebration begins with the sowing of barley seeds in a clay pot, symbolising the beginning of Dashain, and an invocation to Goddess Durga.
  • Day 7 - Fulpati: On this day, flowers and other offerings are brought from Gorkha, the birthplace of King Pashupatinath, to Kathmandu to mark the start of the festival.
  • Day 8 - Maha Aastami: A calendar day associated with the sacrifice of huge animals to Goddess Kali, Durga's awful form.
  • Day 9 - Maha Nawami: The Durga festival is widely celebrated; people pray for shields, tools, and cars, as well as blessings for safety in the following year.
  • Day 10 - Vijaya Dashami: The main day of Dashain celebrations, when most senior people apply tilak and jamara on younger people to symbolise the victory of good over evil. This will be done for the following few days.
  • Day 11 to 14 - Tika Days: Relatives visit each other's homes, especially to receive tika and blessings, and this is how family relationships are strengthened and we celebrate togetherness.
  • Day 15 - Kojagrat Purnima: The final day of the Dashain celebration, which falls on the full moon, when people do not sleep at night to welcome the goddess of prosperity Laxmi. Both of these days are loaded with rites and ceremonies, and Dashain is all about reuniting with family and presenting oneself to the gods.
